About Me
The central issue of the trial was espionage. In August 1948, Whittaker Chambers—a senior editor at Time magazine—was called by the House. He claimed that he had been a member of an underground Communist cell whose members had served in the U.S. government. Chambers also accused Alger Hiss, a former State Department official, of being a fellow member of the Communist cell and a spy for the Soviet Union. The trials of Hiss and Chambers became one of the most publicized and controversial espionage cases in American history.
